More participation point options:

  • Optional Blog Post (DUE before class next Thursday 11/7)
    • Choose a GIF and follow its provenance back as far as you can. Write a post (minimum 500 words) in which you discuss the GIF: how you use it, when you first remember seeing it, and what you found out about its origin. Finally, evaluate the GIF using Jared Sterling Colton’s heuristic of vulnerability and/or Lauren Michele Jackson’s concept of digital blackface. Are there any ethical concerns about people continuing to use this GIF? Why or why not? (Worth 2 points.)

AND/OR

  • Optional Mini-Project (DUE before class next Thursday 11/7)
    • Capture images/footage (WITH CONSENT!) of at least three folks in Halloween costumes either tonight or over the weekend. In a form of your choosing (e.g. short video essay, image collage with annotations, etc.) analyze those costumes as texts: What intertextual knowledge would someone need access to in order to understand the costume? What discourse community (or communities) do these costumes speak to? What discourse community (or communities) are excluded from understanding the costume? (Worth 5 points.)
